Renovation and extension of the KFU main library

The existing extensions from the 50ies, 70ties and 90ties of the main library of the Karl Franzens University ignored more or less an overall architectural concept and created a non satisfying urban and functional situation. Our approach should be to consider the original urban design of the University’s Campus. This means, a noticeable reconnection between the main building and the main library along a central axis is basic to the design. The old reading hall and the existing entrance extension remain. While two new flanking volumes grasp the whole structure of differing elements. The space between the library and the main building becomes a generous linger and connection zone accessing equally the library and auditorium wing. The facade is designed to reconnect the library with all its surrounding existing buildings from the 18th century.
