National and University Library II Ljubljana

The design builds upon the existing crossroads of the Roman town. The theme of the intersection of two roads also brings public space into the entrance area of the new library. These roads also divide the overall plot into construction sites, into insulae, which assume different functions. This means that the ground plan of the Roman town determines the structure of the new library and thereby establishes continuity with the history of this place. The roads also retain their presence within the entire building as the volumes of book repository, which in turn extend to the outer shell of the building, now defining the contemporary urban space anew.
